America’s oldest man credits routine for long life

Luis Cano
Screendump: Fox 5 New York

He says there is no grand theory behind reaching 111. No miracle diet. No secret formula. Just habits. Repeated for decades.

Luis Cano has recently been named by LongeviQuest as the 112th-oldest person in the world, putting him among a very small group of people who live beyond 110.

The milestone has drawn attention from different outlets such as LadBible and FOX 5 New York.

Asked how he feels at 111, Cano didn’t elaborate. He simply said he feels “good.”

His answer stands out for its simplicity. After more than a century of life, there is no dramatic reflection, just a straightforward response.

No-nonsense habits

His advice is just as direct. He said: “Don’t drink a lot. Get good sleep and don’t smoke.”

It is familiar guidance. Most people have heard it before. Few stick to it long enough to test its full impact.

Cano also added: “Behave well.” Short, but pointed. Not just about health, but about how you live day to day.

There’s nothing trendy in what he says. No modern wellness routines. Just consistency.

Life across generations

Born in Colombia in 1914, Cano later moved to the United States in the 1990s with his wife, first living in New York before settling in New Jersey, according to LadBible’s reporting. She died in 2004, but he remained close to family.

His earlier life was busy. He served in the Colombian army, built a bus company, and raised 10 children. That kind of routine leaves little room for excess.

Now, things move more slowly.

He spends time watching planes, a long-standing interest, and still enjoys fishing. Simple, quiet activities. A sharp contrast to today’s screen-heavy routines.

He lives with two of his children and is surrounded by an extended family that now includes great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Reaching 111 is rare. But Cano’s story is not built on rare ideas.

It is built on doing ordinary things, over and over again, for a very long time.
