It might begin as a small reward during the day, a colorful piece of candy to boost your energy. Something sweet for the kids, a party treat, or a snack at the cinema.

But what if this innocent habit conceals something far more serious?

Many of us choose snacks and sweets without thinking much about what’s inside. Color, flavor, and price often matter more than the ingredient list.

But with authorities in the UK now raising concerns about one particular type of candy, it may be time to take a closer look at what’s actually hiding behind the shiny wrapper.

Hidden Substances With Frightening Effects

According to British health authorities, several varieties of the American candy classic Jolly Rancher are suspected of containing mineral oils that are not approved for general food use in the EU.

The two substances causing particular concern are known as MOAH and MOSH. While they may sound like abbreviations from a sci-fi movie, the consequences are anything but fictional.

Research suggests that these chemical compounds can disrupt cellular DNA, potentially increasing the long-term risk of cancer.

Regular, repeated exposure is especially problematic — which becomes a real concern if these products are a permanent fixture in your kitchen drawer.

This Is What You Should Avoid

Several specific candy varieties have been highlighted in the official warning from the UK Food Standards Agency.

If you have any of the following products at home, it is recommended that you dispose of them immediately:

  • Jolly Rancher Hard Candy
  • Jolly Rancher “Misfits” Gummies
  • Jolly Rancher Hard Candy Fruity 2 in 1
  • Jolly Rancher Berry Gummies

It’s not only importers and retailers who have been advised to stop sales. Consumers are also encouraged to contact the authorities if they are unsure whether they may have been exposed to these substances.

Why Immediate Action Matters

Many people may have already eaten the candy without noticing any immediate effects.

But this isn’t about a single serving. It’s about what happens when the body is repeatedly exposed over time to substances it cannot properly process.

Although manufacturer Hershey has been cooperating with authorities to withdraw the affected products since 2024, some retailers — including online sellers — continue to import and sell the candy.
