Another year, another trend

Ever since Social Media saw the light of day, they’ve been filled with a number of trends – and let’s be honest, most of them have been pretty stupid. That being said, sometimes a trend gains popularity because it can actually help you, and the no-buy trend is said to be excacly that.
What’s it all about?

Since 2024 turned into 2025, thousands of individuals around the world have committed to making 2025 a no-buy-year. Basically this means that you cut down your unnecessary purchases to save money or pay of debt.
The 67k Subreddit

On the online forum Reddit, there’s a Subreddit dedicated to the goal. Titled “Get your spending under control”, more than 67k Redditors help each other out with encouragement, tips and stories of succes to inspire others.

Started by af 35 year-old

According to Vice, the trend can be traced back to Elysia Berman, 35, from New York City. She allowed to clear herself of a ton of debt in 2024 by practicing the no-buy philosophy, and late last year she shared her no-buy rules for 2025 on TikTok.
What you need to do

If you’re used to buying stuff, Bermans rules might take som getting used to. Her tips include not buying clothing, perfume, juwelry, technology, books, home decor – basically everything that you don’t need to stay alive. She also has a takeout-once-per-month-rule and stays clear of cancelling her Pilates class, as this includes a $10 cancellation fee.
Extreme? You just don’t understand it

According to Forbes, Berman said that if you find the no-buy-rules a bit extreme, it might have to do with you not understanding how stressful a life with debt can be. She admits it can be hard, but she hails the philosophy as life-changing and, after a while, very refreshing.
How much can you save?

How well the no-buy-challenge will work for you depends on how your spendings are right now. If you’re already living sparsely, you might not be able to save up a whole lot. But if you tend to treat yourself to a new phone every year, or maybe can’t walk past a Sales-sign without exiting the shop with a new pair of jeans, this might be the philosophy that can turn your economy around!
