Navigating international waters always requires extreme caution, especially when military vessels are nearby.

A minor misunderstanding can quickly turn into a major diplomatic headache. Now, a tense encounter on the high seas has sparked widespread mockery online, reports The Express.

Dangerous close encounter

The incident unfolded in the English Channel on Tuesday under a thick blanket of fog. A Russian warship came unexpectedly close to a private vessel. According to a report by The Express, the military frigate Admiral Grigorovich fired warning shots during the standoff.

The private boat was the Bright Future, a UK-registered yacht. Onboard were Alan Kelvey, 71, and his wife Jane, 69, two British pensioners out sailing. The warship reportedly fired its shots from a distance of about 500 yards.

Fortunately, no one was hurt and the yacht suffered no damage. The couple continued their journey safely. However, the bizarre confrontation quickly caught the attention of observers in Ukraine, who wasted no time poking fun at the Russian navy.

Deeply puzzled onlookers

Ukrainian commentators quickly used the story to ridicule Moscow’s military prowess. Leading the charge was the Telegram channel Pravda Gerashchenko. In a biting post, the channel mocked, “It seems the Russian fleet has finally found an enemy it is not afraid to list as a threat to national security”.

Other media figures joined in the laughter. Ukrainian television presenter Dmitry Gordon openly questioned the official explanations coming from the Russian side. Gordon sarcastically noted, “A sailing yacht tried to ram a military frigate. Very ‘convincing!'”

The mockery intensified when Ukrainian channels compared early Russian military reports with reality. A Russian military outlet named Fighterbomber had claimed the warship opened fire to stop two British warships from seizing an escorted vessel.

Turning into warships

The Nexta channel quickly exposed that claim by publishing a photograph of the retirement couple’s small boat.

Nexta commented, “This is what the yacht threatened by the Russian frigate in the English Channel looks like. The Z crowd overhyped it. With one sleight of hand, a pensioners’ yacht turns into two warships. Is this the kind of report that will land on Putin’s desk too?”

Meanwhile, official voices in Moscow tried to laugh off the incident. Maria Zakharova, the spokeswoman for the Russian foreign ministry, posted a map of Moscow and joked about sailing the warship past the British Embassy.

Zakharova asked online, “Would Admiral Grigorovich be returning home by this route? Just asking in advance, in case the British embassy fancies another dangerous close encounter.”
