Trump’s opinion about the upcoming midterms sparks controversy.

Donald Trump is making one thing crystal clear to both allies and opponents: the midterm elections are not going to push him toward a faster deal with Iran.

Speaking during a White House cabinet meeting on Wednesday, the US president dismissed suggestions that growing political pressure at home could force his administration to wrap up the escalating conflict.

“They thought they were going to outwait me,” Trump said about Iran’s leadership according to Reuters.

“You know, ‘We’ll outwait him. He’s got the midterms.’ I don’t care about the midterms.”

War Timeline Keeps Expanding

Trump originally suggested the conflict could last between four and six weeks.

Reality has looked very different.

Fighting is now approaching its fourth month, despite repeated claims from the president at various points that negotiations or military objectives could soon bring the conflict to an end.

Uncertainty surrounding the war has increasingly unsettled parts of the Republican Party, especially as fuel prices continue climbing across the United States.

Several Republican lawmakers are reportedly growing nervous about voter frustration tied to inflation and gasoline costs ahead of November’s elections.

Concerns have also intensified because Republicans already face a difficult battle to hold onto control of Congress.

Trump Celebrates Controversial Republican Victory

Political tension inside the Republican Party grew further after Trump backed Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton over longtime Republican senator John Cornyn in a high-profile primary race.

Paxton, who has faced felony fraud charges and is currently going through a divorce filed on biblical grounds by his wife, defeated Cornyn after receiving Trump’s endorsement.

Democrats now reportedly believe the Texas Senate seat could unexpectedly become competitive in November.

“Look at what happened last night,” Trump said while discussing Paxton’s victory.

“That was a prelude to the midterms.”

Critics Question White House Priorities

Cabinet meeting also included discussion about several construction projects Trump has championed around Washington D.C., including renovations involving the White House grounds.

Reuters reported that Trump has increasingly referenced plans connected to a White House ballroom, upgrades to the Reflecting Pool and proposals for a large arch in the capital.

Some Republicans privately fear the focus on expensive symbolic projects risks distracting attention from economic worries voters care more deeply about as the Iran conflict continues weighing on prices and political momentum.
