Mass graves have long been a grim feature of warfare.
They are used to deal with large numbers of dead when conflict overwhelms normal systems.
Today, that reality is once again drawing attention.
Grim discovery
Satellite images have uncovered a mass grave more than 50 meters long at a cemetery in Mariupol, according to reporting cited by Express.
The site, located at Starokrimsky Cemetery, was identified using imagery collected over several years and analysis by the Mariupol Destruction and Victims Foundation.
Officials announced the finding on April 30, pointing to a large trench that gradually expanded over time.
There are no confirmed figures for how many bodies may be buried at the site.
However, human rights groups, including the Kharkiv Human Rights Protection Group, estimate that as many as 100,000 people may have died in the city during Russia’s assault.
While not all are believed to be buried in the trench, the grave could contain thousands or even tens of thousands of victims.
Evolving site
Researchers first noticed signs of excavation in satellite images from 2023.
What began as a small ditch later developed into a large pit and eventually a mound.
According to the city council, the site expanded from around 30 meters to approximately 55 meters between 2022 and 2024.
The burial site lies in a low-lying area partially concealed by natural terrain.
It is situated less than two miles from residential neighborhoods and close to a location that was used as an improvised morgue in 2022.
Authorities say access to the area was restricted, preventing closer inspection.
Possible victims
Investigators believe many of those buried may have been killed in airstrikes on residential buildings.
Some victims are thought to be from a destroyed apartment block on Myru Avenue, while others may have come from separate attacks as fighting intensified.
Reports suggest Russian forces could have transported bodies to the site and carried out the burials.
