According to the official, upcoming NATO drills are actually practice for seizing Kaliningrad.

Tensions around the Baltic Sea are rising as Russian officials accuse NATO of rehearsing offensive scenarios near its borders. The claims come amid ongoing military exercises and heightened rhetoric between Moscow and the alliance.

Russia’s deputy foreign minister has pointed to specific drills he says signal growing confrontation in northern Europe.

In an interview with RIA Novosti, Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko said NATO is conducting exercises that simulate a blockade and the possible capture of Russia’s Kaliningrad region.

“During exercises under the auspices of the Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF), scenarios such as a naval blockade and the seizure of the Kaliningrad region are being practiced,” he said.

Competing claims

He further alleged that NATO’s Operation Baltic Sentinel, launched in January 2025, is designed to control key transport routes and limit Russian trade.

“NATO is deliberately pursuing a path of increasing confrontation in this part of Europe,” Grushko said.

NATO has not publicly responded to the accusations, though similar claims were made by the diplomat in late 2025.

Military capabilities

According to Kyiv Post, Western officials have downplayed the likelihood of any immediate move against Kaliningrad but acknowledge the region’s vulnerability if conflict escalates.

Lt. Gen. Christopher Donahue, speaking in 2025, said NATO forces could take control of the area rapidly if required.

“We can take that down from the ground in a timeframe that is unheard of—faster than we’ve ever been able to do,” he said.

Regional flashpoint

The JEF, led by the United Kingdom and comprising 10 northern European nations, was formed in 2015 to respond quickly to crises, particularly in the Baltic and Arctic regions.

Kaliningrad, a Russian exclave located between Poland and Lithuania, is heavily militarized and widely seen as a potential point of conflict between Russia and NATO.

Grushko also warned that NATO naval activity, including mine countermeasure units, could disrupt shipping and economic stability in the region.

Ongoing tensions

Annual NATO drills in the Baltic Sea, known as BALTOPS, continue to expand, involving thousands of troops and dozens of military units.

At the same time, Western intelligence has warned that Russia could test NATO’s resolve within the next decade, potentially targeting the Baltic states or nearby territories.
