High-level diplomatic meetings often end with firm handshakes and grand promises behind closed doors.

Sometimes, international leaders walk away believing they have completely reshaped the global map. But reality has a nasty habit of tearing up those secret plans.

A failed promise

Moscow is currently airing its frustrations over a supposed backroom deal. A top Russian official recently complained that the United States is failing to deliver on a very specific geopolitical promise.

Yuri Ushakov serves as a key advisor to Russian President Vladimir Putin. He recently told Russian media that Washington has not lived up to an agreement allegedly struck during a major summit in Anchorage, Alaska.

The reported pact involved President Donald Trump. Russian officials firmly believed Washington would force Ukraine to accept peace conditions drawn up by Moscow.

Blaming the resistance

That strategy completely collapsed. Ukrainian leaders refused to surrender, and European nations quickly stepped in to offer massive political backing.

According to the Latvian news outlet LA.LV, Ushakov admitted that Western support ruined their expectations. The Kremlin had bet heavily on American pressure breaking Kyiv.

Ushakov shared his disappointment in a recent interview. He claimed the situation changed drastically when Washington actually tried to test the waters.

“An understanding was indeed reached about what one or the other side would do in the context of resolving the Ukrainian conflict. The Americans promised to fulfill their part of this understanding, but faced a number of difficulties, which, as I understand, are primarily related to Kiev’s behavior and Kiev’s reaction to one or another American attempt to probe the situation and addresses,” said Ushakov.

Eyes on Europe

The Russian advisor pointed a frustrated finger at the European Union. He argued that ongoing European financial and military aid makes Ukraine even more stubborn at the negotiating table.

LA.LV noted that Moscow remains heavily focused on cutting off international lifelines. Russian officials still hope the United States will eventually stop sending crucial weapons and valuable intelligence to the front lines.

Military aid remains a major sticking point for the Kremlin. Even as Moscow attempts to bargain with Washington, Western allies continue to equip Ukrainian defense forces.
