Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced the creation of a new military branch dedicated to unmanned systems, further integrating drones and related technologies into the country’s armed forces.

Speaking during a meeting on Russia’s new state armament program, Putin emphasized the importance of rapidly establishing these forces.

“We need to ensure the fastest and highest-quality deployment of these forces,” he said, according to state news agency TASS on June 12.

Putin also addressed Russia’s current position in drone warfare: “We know how the enemy operates. But overall, I don’t believe we’re lagging behind in this area. On the contrary, I think we have gathered solid experience that allows us to create this new branch.”

The move comes after Ukraine earlier this year set up its own Unmanned Systems Forces as a distinct service branch within its armed forces. Moscow’s decision appears to follow a similar path.

Russia has already been employing drones extensively on the battlefield, and the creation of this new branch signals an intent to formalize and expand their role within the military structure.

“Russia must broadly introduce advanced digital technologies and artificial intelligence into its armaments,” he said at the meeting.

This focus on integrating digital tools and AI reflects a broader effort to modernize Russia’s military capabilities in line with emerging technologies.

The establishment of the new unmanned systems branch is part of Russia’s larger armament program that will cover the period from 2027 to 2036. As part of this plan, Putin directed military leadership to strengthen the combat capabilities of Russia’s ground forces.

He also called for the development of a unified and comprehensive air defense system, describing it as a key element of the updated military strategy.

Previous reports have indicated that Russia is converting the Kerch airport in occupied Crimea into a drone launch hub, suggesting ongoing efforts to enhance its drone infrastructure.
