A Ukrainian FP-5 Flamingo cruise missile destroyed a key section of a Russian chemical plant that supplies components for various missile systems.
Satellite imagery confirms that a Ukrainian cruise missile successfully struck a chemical plant in Russia. According to United24 Media, an FP-5 Flamingo missile hit the Volgogradpromproekt facility overnight on September 11. The attack completely destroyed a significant portion of the main production building.
Open-source intelligence analysts reviewed the post-strike satellite images to determine the extent of the damage. As reported by United24 Media, the Exilenova+ project concluded that the explosion destroyed a workshop section measuring 20 by 15 meters. A second missile apparently missed the primary target and left an impact crater nearby.
The Ukrainian defense company responsible for manufacturing the Flamingo missile verified its involvement in the operation. According to United24 Media, Fire Point confirmed that the strike destroyed an attached section of the industrial building. The manufacturer stated that approximately 380 square meters of the facility completely collapsed due to the hit.
Supplying the military-industrial complex
The targeted Volgogradpromproekt facility specializes in small-scale chemical production for industrial applications. According to United24 Media, the plant manufactures organophosphorus compounds, flame retardants, and various resins. These specialized chemicals serve as essential components for the Russian defense industry.
One of the plant’s primary products is an organosilicon derivative of ferrocene known as OSF. As noted by United24 Media, this substance functions as a catalyst and burn-rate modifier in composite solid rocket propellants. Manufacturers rely on this chemical to regulate the combustion speed of rocket fuel while maintaining required performance characteristics.
The chemical plant supplies several major Russian defense manufacturers across the country. According to United24 Media, customers include the Perm Powder Plant, which produces propellants and explosives for over 100 weapons systems. These systems include Grad and Smerch rockets alongside various surface-to-air missiles.
Disrupting missile and shipbuilding supply chains
The targeted facility actively participates in the broader production chains for advanced Russian weaponry. According to United24 Media, the plant provides materials for Kalibr cruise missiles and air-launched anti-ship missiles. Another major client, the Kamensky Chemical Plant, produces solid fuel for Iskander-M and Kinzhal missile systems.
The Volgograd-based enterprise also delivers essential materials to the Russian shipbuilding industry. As highlighted by United24 Media, the company supplies the Amur Shipbuilding Plant with necessary chemical components. This shipyard is currently responsible for constructing Project 22800 Karakurt-class missile ships for the navy.
Ukrainian forces are increasingly utilizing the FP-5 Flamingo cruise missile to strike strategic targets within Russia. According to United24 Media, the military previously used this weapon to attack the Progress Rocket Space Center in Samara. That specific facility serves as the only plant that serially assembles Soyuz-2 launch vehicles.
