Consumers are being urged to check their freezers after federal regulators announced a recall on a popular ice cream product sold across the United States.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says the affected batch may contain undeclared wheat and soy.

Recall details

The product involved is Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream Passion Fruit Dreamsicle Ice Cream Bars, distributed to grocery stores nationwide, including major retailers such as Kroger.

The recalled 3-ounce bars can be identified by its batch code: 25-210, printed on the top of the box.

Although no illnesses have been reported, the FDA warns that the batch may have been cross-contaminated during production.

Because wheat and soy are not listed on the label, allergic consumers would have no way of knowing the product contains those ingredients.

Allergy risks

Wheat and soy allergies can cause a range of reactions, from mild hives to life-threatening anaphylaxis. The FDA notes that individuals with known allergies should avoid consuming the product under any circumstances.

Symptoms of a severe reaction may include:

  • Difficulty breathing or speaking
  • Dizziness or fainting
  • Abdominal pain, nausea or vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Swelling of the lips, tongue or throat

Anyone experiencing severe symptoms should call 911 immediately.

If you have the recalled ice cream bars at home, the agency advises to dispose of the product, or return it to the retailer for a full refund.
