People are starting to speculate on a potential power struggle between Trump and Vance, if the latter decides to run.

What is happening?

During a recent interview with Fox News’ Lara Trump, U.S. Vice President JD Vance avoided giving a clear answer about his political ambitions for 2028.

When asked directly whether he planned to run for president after Donald Trump, Vance deflected, choosing instead to focus on his current role.

The big question

Lara Trump, daughter-in-law of the president, posed a direct question:

“A lot of people think that you will be running for president in 2028, can we expect that?”

It was a moment designed to get a headline—but Vance declined to offer one.

Vance keeps focus on the present

Rather than confirming or denying any 2028 plans, Vance responded:

“I just think that… I don’t like thinking about it because I like thinking about the job that I have right now.”

He emphasized the importance of staying grounded in the present, adding that any political discussions should wait until 2027.

A swipe at ambitious politicians?

Vance made it clear he’s not eager to be seen as already angling for his next role:

“I really think the American people are so fed up with folks who are already running for the next job seven months into the current one.”

It seemed to be a subtle critique of career politicians who shift focus too soon.

“It’s not going to be given to me”

Even while sidestepping the question, Vance acknowledged that if he does decide to run, it won’t be an easy ride:

“There are a lot of great people… it’s not going to be given to me either on the Republican side or on the national side.”

He suggested that any future bid would require hard work—not entitlement.

Vance described the vice presidency as the most important job he’s ever had—except for being a dad:

“It may be the most important job I ever have outside of being a father to those three beautiful kids.”

He framed his priorities as deeply personal, downplaying political ambition.

Public reactions: Suspicion and sarcasm

Reactions online were mixed. Some viewers praised Vance’s measured tone, while others were skeptical.

One commenter joked, “Bro said he’s not thinking about 2028 while already measuring the Oval Office curtains.”

Others called it a “classic politician move” and accused him of dodging an obvious truth: he’s likely already preparing for a run.

Donald Trump going for third term?

In March, Donald Trump told NBS News, that he wouldn’t rule out seeking a third term, as “there are methods” to get around the two-term limit.

In May, he said that he wouldn’t seek a third term, but in August, the POTUS said that he will “probably not” seek a third term.

The next MAGA-leader or a threat to Trump?

JD Vance has become known for voicing the Trump administrations displeasure with American allies as well as taking a hardline stance on MAGA-policies such as immigration.

The POTUS and the next in command appear to have a strong partnership, but how will Trump react if he decides to seek a third term, and Vance is running against him?
