A new chapter is forming around Disney’s hit Frozen franchise, but the studio is keeping its cards close.

What is clear, though, is that the company is making significant long-term commitments to its core cast, and paying handsomely to do so.

Articles point to a renewed push behind both Frozen 3 and Frozen 4, as Disney prepares to extend one of its most lucrative animated properties.

Big contracts set

According to The Wrap, Kristen Bell, Josh Gad, and Idina Menzel have all finalized agreements to return for the next two films.

The outlet reported that the combined value of the deals exceeds $60 million, reflecting Disney’s determination to keep the original voices of Anna, Olaf, and Elsa at the center of the franchise.

Their work is expected to ramp up soon. Frozen 3 has been in active development since 2023 and is currently slated for release on November 24, 2027, following a one-year delay from its earlier 2026 target.

Creative shift

The Wrap noted that Jennifer Lee, who previously served as Chief Creative Officer at Walt Disney Animation Studios, will direct the third film after stepping down from her executive post last year.

While no plot summary has been released, Frozen II left Anna ruling Arendelle and Elsa living in the enchanted forest.

At D23 Expo 2024, Disney unveiled the first piece of concept art, showing the sisters on horseback staring toward a city in the clouds while a shadowy figure watches from above. No additional explanation accompanied the reveal.

Cast busy elsewhere

Beyond the franchise, all three leads have remained active across film, television, and theater.

The Wrap reported that Bell’s recent projects include the Netflix series Nobody Wants This, which returned for a second season in the fall and has already been renewed again.

Gad has been developing and starring in Spaceballs 2, and Menzel completed a Broadway run in Redwood earlier this year.

Looking ahead

By the time Frozen 3 reaches cinemas, eight years will have passed since Frozen II’s debut. Whether the newly signed contracts accelerate progress on Frozen 4 remains unknown. Disney Animation is also working on the fantasy feature Hexed, planned for release next year.
